Participación de la IL-17 en la periodontitis crónica y agresiva

RESUMEN
La enfermedad periodontal (EP) es una de las enfermedades crónicas infecciosas más comunes en el ser humano. Las características clínicas de la periodontitis crónica y agresiva incluyen pérdida de la inserción, pérdida del hueso alveolar, bolsas periodontales e inflamación gingival. Tanto los factores de virulencia de las bacterias periodontopatógenas como la respuesta inmune contra ellas están involucrados en la destrucción de los tejidos observados en la periodontitis. Las citocinas son mediadores de la respuesta inmune que juegan un papel importante en la patogénesis de la enfermedad periodontal. Este artículo es una revisión que se enfoca en el papel que juega la IL-17 en la pérdida ósea tanto en la periodontitis crónica como agresiva, debido a que en los últimos años se ha descrito la participación de esta citocina en otras enfermedades crónico-degenerativas como la artritis reumatoide en donde una de las principales afecciones es la pérdida ósea.
