ABSTRACT
Latex is the material obtained from the milky sap, synthesized by specialized laticiferous cells, and from the damaged bark of the Hevea brasiliensis tree. The allergens Hev b1, Hev b3, Hev b5 and Hev b6.02 are considered genuine major allergens, useful indicators for diagnostic tests. Latex allergy is an immediate hypersensitivity reaction, caused by previous exposure to products containing latex proteins and is triggered in people with specific IgE for this material and where some cells are also involved. Latex-fruit syndrome is a clinical association between latex allergy and an allergic response to certain fruits and/or vegetables. The main strategy for treatment is avoidance, the second step of treatment is the use of antihistamines and steroids to reduce clinical manifestations.
