ABSTRACT
Objective: The objective of this investigation was to know if a biologic inanimate simulator of the porcine species let the realization of surgical skills within the area of esthetic facial surgery.
Design: It is a descriptive, prospective, single blind and cross sectional study.
Methods: Two certificated plastic surgeons already trained in basic laparoscopic skills carried out 24 investigative procedures, 12 procedures each one, on both sides of the head of a biologic model from an adult York pig. The considered variables were the efficiency on the handling of the instrumental, oculo-motor tridimensional coordination, the ability to dissect the structures on anatomic basis, endoscopic suture as well as the time elapsed in each procedure. Descriptive statistics were used.
Results: Twelve lifting procedures were carried out by each surgeon and the endoscopic innovative procedure was successful in 100% of the cases. The time elapsed in each procedure was reduced in a progressive manner from 15 minutes at the beginning till 3 minutes in the last procedure. The average time elapsed was 7.41 minutes and the standard deviation was 3.65 minutes.
Conclusions: The inanimate biologic model from an adult York pig can be used as a practical tool for the training of esthetic laparoscopic surgical procedures on the face. It is a simple and a low price model for postgraduate training in any medical center.
