ABSTRACT
Uterine leiomyomas are tumors associated with tumors of secondary erythrocytosis. The production of ectopic erythropoietin by smooth muscle fibroids has been proposed and demonstrated in the literature. Isolated erythrocytosis has been shown to be the result of ectopic production of erythropoietin (Epo) in various malignancies, including kidney cells and hepatocellular carcinoma. It has been found to occur in foreign tumors such as cerebellar hemangioblastoma and adenomas. It is less commonly associated with uterine leiomyoma. Surgeons are increasingly using laparoscopy for hysterectomy. However, the role of laparoscopy in the presence of a giant uterus is still debated. In patients with myomatous erythriocytosis syndrome (ESM) present with signs and symptoms attributed to a tummy tuck or erythrocytosis, preoperative phlebotomy helps to decrease the severity of erythrocytosis and has been used to mitigate the risk of thrombotic complications. Surgical resection of leiomyoma is a valid approach for the treatment of MES.
