Mechanisms of inflammation in periodontal destruction

ABSTRACT
Periodontal disease (PD) is an alteration caused by bacteria, but inflammation is the main cause of chronicity and periodontal tissue destruction, mainlyof alveolar bone, which may lead to edentulism. The mechanisms responsible for this destruction include non-regulated increase of inflammatory mediators and alterations in inflammation resolution pathways. Given the silent and painless character of this pathology, it is usually ignored, so it worsens and may reach severe stages. Hence, PD has a high prevalence. The present review describes the molecular and cellular mechanisms of inflammation in PD progress and the principal immune cells and molecules involved in periodontal destruction. A thorough knowledge of PD pathogenesis based on chronic inflammation could provide novel therapeutic alternatives to reduce PD and treatment shortcomings.
