ABSTRACT
Due to the high prevalence of diabetes mellitus type 2, this has become a health problem
around the world. At present the involvement of the obesity is known as the most
important risk factor for its development, keeping in mind that even in patients with
normal weight, a high percentage of body fat can be found. The change in hygienic
dietetic habits are interventions directed to prevention and treatment. The choice of
pharmacologic treatment should consider control of the muscle/fat relationship for the
control of body weight. Bariatric surgery is indicated in patients with IMC › 35 kg/m
2
with associated risk factors, highlighting the partial remission shown after the treatment,
with long term studies being necessary of its benefic effects after the procedure. Due
to the importance of these illnesses a review of the subject is made.
