Función de la vitamina D en la prevención de enfermedades

RESUMEN
Día con día, la vitamina D cobra mayor importancia, no solo en el campo de la
nutrición, sino en diversos aspectos, la inmunología es uno de los que más ha
cobrado importancia tras relacionarse con la intervención de diversos mecanismos
reguladores. Debido a que la síntesis de la vitamina D comienza desde la
exposición a los rayos UV, ésta es sumamente importante para mantener concentraciones
adecuadas de vitamina D en sangre y evitar la predisposición a ciertas
enfermedades; sin embargo, cuando esto no es posible debido a enfermedad renal
crónica o a estancias prolongadas en espacios con sombra, se requerirá la administración
complementaria de vitamina D; esta administración complementaria
se ha asociado con disminución del riesgo de padecer ciertas enfermedades, así
como con mejoría en su pronóstico, como la diabetes mellitus tipo 1, lupus, artritis
reumatoide, enfermedades vasculares como hipertensión, enfermedad arterial periférica,
evento vascular cerebral, así como demencias, cefaleas, esclerosis múltiple,
miastenia gravis e, incluso, infecciones, por lo que su papel ya no solo se limita
al metabolismo del calcio y fósforo, sino que hoy día se relaciona con múltiples
sistemas descritos y por describir.
