ABSTRACT
Introduction: Despite the large number of descriptions of anatomical variations of carotid arteries, there is scarce information available in the literature about the most frequent level of bifurcation of these vessels and null in relation to Mexican patients. Knowledge of the most common bifurcation site of the common carotid artery may be important to minimize surgical morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing procedures involving the carotid artery.
Objective: To determine the frequency of the bifurcation level of the common carotid artery in relation to the cervical vertebral segment determined by angiography in mexican population.
Material and methods: Retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive study. Adult patients attended consecutively in the neurological endovascular therapy service of the Hospital Juárez de México who underwent diagnostic digital cerebral angiography were included, in the period from January 2016 to March 2018.
Results: 100 patients were included (60 women and 40 men). The most frequent carotid bifurcation site was at the intervertebral space C3-C4 (33%) for the right side and at the level of the vertebral body of C3 (29%) for the left side.
Conclusions: The knowledge of the frequency of the bifurcation site of the common carotid artery in our population is fundamental for planning endovascular and surgical procedures related to carotid arteries and their branches, and could minimize complications.
