ABSTRACT
The impaction is defined as a failure in the dental eruption caused by a physical obstacle, alterations in the eruption of the second permanent molars are quite rare.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of impact of second permanent molars, in patients who received attention to the orthodontic service during the period August 2015- June 2017.
Material and methods: A total of 2,968 panoramic radiographs were reviewed and 31 patients with impacted second molars were identified, from which a sample of 41 impacted molars was obtained. With the information obtained, prevalence, age, sex, facial biotype and skeletal class were determined. In the same way, information was collected to identify the frequency in relation to each of the quadrants.
Results: The prevalence of impacted second permanent molars of 1.4%, the distribution by sex shows that the highest prevalence corresponded to the female sex (53.7%) and for the male the prevalence was 46.3%.
Conclusions: The relationship with the facial biotype and the skeletal class directly influences the prevalence of impact as well as local factors such as the development and position of the third molar, the space between the distal surface of the first molar and the anterior edge of the mandibular ramus, as well as the development and type of growth of the mandible.
