ABSTRACT
Introduction: Phacoemulsification is an advanced surgical procedure to treat cataract; a proportion of subjects reach postoperative corrected visual acuity ‹ 20/30. The causes of this outcome have not been reported in our population.
Objective: To identify the features associated with corrected visual acuity ‹ 20/30 one month after phacoemulsification.
Material and methods: Non-experimental, cross-sectional, retrospective, an analytic study in patients treated with phacoemulsification between March 1st, and June 30th, 2017. We identified the proportion of patients whose corrected visual acuity one month after surgery was ‹ 20/30 and compared preoperative variables between them and the rest. We used χ
2 and relative risk (qualitative variables) and Student’s t-test (quantitative variables); we considered p values ‹ 0.05 and relative risk values ‹ 3 as significant.
Results: 161 patients were evaluated, 55 reached corrected visual acuity ‹ 20/30 a month after phacoemulsification (34.2%, 95% C.I. 26.8 to 41.5); this outcome was statistically higher in eyes with ocular comorbidities (p = 0.04), but the difference was not clinically significant (relative risk 1.33).
Conclusions: In our population, the variables usually associated with bad postoperative visual acuity did not show differences between 34.2% of patients who reached corrected visual acuity ‹ 20/30, and those whose visual acuity is better one month after phacoemulsification.
