ABSTRACT
An exploratory study to determine the capacity of general and family physicians that work in the first attention level, to diagnose and treat depressive illnesses, is described. It was found that the main causes generating depressive states were family problems, chronic and terminal illnesses, difficulty in adaptating to the various individual and familiar life stages, and in lesser degree alcohol and drug use.
On the other hand, 81% of the general and family physicians diagnose and treat a high percentage of non severe depressive disorders, preferably using pharmacological schemes based on serotonin recapture inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants.
