ABSTRACT
Objective: To know the prevalence of child and adolescent obesity in an ambulatory service at the Hospital Infantil del Estado de Sonora during three periods of time (1985, 1995 and 2003).
Material and Methods: We reviewed 2651 clinical records of patients who attended for the first time at an ambulatory service, we searched for the anthopometric measures to obtain the body mass index.
Results: We have found an increase of overweight and obesity as well, in the time we have considered. In scholars there was an increase from 3.3% to 18.3% (p0.0001). In total the overweight and obesity increase was of 98% from 1985 thru 2003 (p0.0001).
Conclusions: There is an increase in obesity in children who attended the ambulatory service at the Hospital Infantil del Estado de Sonora. Also the percentage increase in overweight and obesity was evident between 1985 and 2003. We suggest some actions to treat and try to revert this tendency.
