ABSTRACT
Objective: To establish prevalence and characteristics
of hospitalized psychiatric in patients.
Method: Physical examinations were done in every patient
admitted to San Rafael Clinic in Mexico City, thorough
a 10 months period, including a clinical interview and photography
to those who had tattoo.
Results: Twenty-five patients had tattoos and a mental
disorder. Regarding gender, 22 were men and only 3 were
women. Tattoo was done before legal age in 15 patients
(60%), and 13 patients (52%) had more than one design.
Psychopathology prevalence included personality disorder
in 38%, substance abuse in 33%, depressive disorders
in 17%, and schizophrenic disorders in 12%. An evident
association was made between substance abuse
and antisocial personality disorder in psychiatric tattoo inpatients.
Discussion: Issues regarding gender perspective, legal
aspects for tattoo as well as psychopathology association
are discussed.
Conclusions: Even when prevalence of psychiatric patients
with tattoos is relatively low, it is important in
psychiatric practice to consider place of body, design and
environmental background of patients. This will allow a
better understanding as well as best doctor-patient relationship
including a best treatment response, regarding primary
pathology.
