ABSTRACT
Background. The prevalence of superior vena cava syndrome secondary to venous stenosis or thrombosis
after placement of hemodialysis catheters ranging in rank from 10 to 50%. No specific studies of
biological markers as risk factor for preventing the occurrence of venous central stenosis. However, numerous
studies have documented hypoalbuminemia as a marker of endothelial damage.
Objective. To demonstrate the relationship between hypoalbuminemia and the appearance of central
stenosis in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing placement of a central venous catheter for hemodialysis
replacement therapy.
Material and methods. The type of study is retrospective, transversal, analytical, observational conducted
by the Vascular Surgery Service of Hospital “Lic. Adolfo López Mateos”, ISSSTE.
Results. Regarding the puncture site for the placement of central venous catheter between both jugular
veins and the emergence of venous central stenosis is statistically significant between the two sites (SD
1.55 ± 0.475 P ‹ 0.05) in relation to the number of catheters (SD 1.29 55 ± 0.475 P ‹ 0.05).
Conclusions. With the study we suspect that all patients with chronic renal failure and the presence of
central venous catheter for hemodialysis should be ruled central stenosis through extension studies, with
the aim of reducing the early vascular access failure.
