ABSTRACT
Introduction: The procedures for finishing and polishing dental restorations are crucial phases in dental practice, as well-finished and well-polished surfaces increase the longevity of the restoration and reduce the buildup of plaque and marginal color changes in both the restoration and the surface.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate three different polishing systems: Sof-Lex
™, Jiffy
® polisher cups, and the OptraPol one-step system, based on the surface obtained using three brands of cosmetic nanohybrid resins in the anterior and posterior regions.
Material and methods: Thirty-six 8 x 2.5 mm discs were made, 12 for each brand of resin. Four groups were established, one for each polishing system and a control one. The polished surfaces were evaluated using an atomic force microscope and then compared based on an analysis of variance between groups (ANOVA).
Results: The three-step methods (Jiffy
® and Sof-Lex
™) produced roughness values below the maximum considered to be clinically acceptable. The one-step system produced the highest surface roughness values, which were twice those of the three-step methods.
Conclusion: The roughness values found were below the clinically acceptable threshold of 1 µm, hence the polishing methods used in the study can be regarded as suitable for polishing nanohybrid resins.
