ABSTRACT
Sport activity is considered good for health, although it may be the cause of early osteoarthritis. Knee and ankle lesions are the most frequent and may be originated due to the high number of injuries or for a joint overload. The ability to change the course in its early stages depends on the modification of intrinsic and extrinsic factors (training, equipment, work load). This is important in caring lesions, even more in sport professionals. Integrity of ligaments, meniscus and cartilage must be protected and return to play must be done in a safe and slow manner. When a lesion is detected, it must be correctly evaluated to establish an adequate option of treatment, whether is conservative or surgical. About cartilage injuries nowadays more options are available for an almost perfect repair. However, cost benefit and time invested are always a limitation, especially in high performance athletes, not only in Mexico but in the world. Injuries prevention tendency or the correct treatment, focused in the long term health of the patient had been crucial for a better surgical approach. The purpose of this study is to describe the importance of the cartilage injuries in the knee and to describe the classical and more recent surgical treatments.
