ABSTRACT
Introduction: endometrial adenocarcinoma is the fourth leading cause of cancer among women in developed countries. While genetic and hereditary factors account for 5-10% of the known causes of cancer, environmental factors and lifestyle account for over 90% remaining. Objectives: to characterize endometrial adenocarcinoma in Ramón González Coro Hospital in 2008, with regard to determining the frequency of the disease by age groups and skin color, to present the main epidemiological antecedents of risk, and to determine the most frequent stages and their links with the selected variables.
Methods: the design was descriptive, observational, cross-sectional and retrospective. 47 biopsy reports were analyzed as belonging to the patients affected by endometrial cancer.
Results: 72.34% of the patients had white skin. 46.80% were in the age group of 60-75 years. Hypertension was present in 74.4%, followed by diabetes and obesity with 63.83% and 42.55%, respectively. 74.47% had endometrial carcinoma. 86% of the well-differentiated lesions were in stage I.
Conclusions: the age group of 60-75 years showed the highest percentages of presentation, regardless of skin color. More than half of the patients had two or three risk factors. Endometrial carcinoma predominated. There was an association between the stage and the degree of differentiation of the lesion, but not with the histological subtype.
