ABSTRACT
An experiment using 432 ISA Babcock B300 55 week old laying hens housed in cages in a conventional poultry house were tested during 56 days. Two sources of different levels of addition of commercial synthetic methionine were compared; DL-methionine (DLM) and methionine hydroxy analogue free acid 2-hydroxy-4-metilbutanoic (MHA) in sorghum + soybean diets (0.00, 0.112 and 0.223% of DLM and 0.00, 0.127 and 0.253% of MHA) on an equimolar basis. During the experiment, egg production, egg weight, egg mass, feed consumption, feed conversion and egg shell thickness were measured. Results obtained for egg production, egg weight, egg mass and feed conversion were not different (P › 0.05) among methionine sources, however, supplementation with both sources of methionine improved performance. Data obtained in this trial indicate that the addition of both sources of methionine on an equimolar basis in sorghum + soybean diets for laying hens produced similar results regarding performance.
