ABSTRACT
Background: Paraganglioma is often identified incidentally, in outpatient, approaching cervical
masses.
Objective: Determine the location and classification according to Shamblin paragangliomas and
correlate the clinical presentation, imaging findings and demonstrate the usefulness of MDCT in
the diagnosis and treatment planning of paragangliomas.
Material and methods: Descriptive, observational, prospective, cross-sectional study from May,
1st. 2013 to August, 31st 2013, 4 months, in cases identified by PACS system with paraganglioma
diagnosis established by magnetic resonance and / or MDCT.
Results: We identified 7 (100%) patients all of whom were female, ranging in age from 42 to 77;
the paraganglioma was clinically suspected diagnosis in 2 (28%) patients and in the remaining 5
(71%), the paraganglioma was an incidental imaging finding; with respect to the location, in 6 (86%)
was identified in the carotid body paraganglioma and 1 (14%) was identified to left tympanic paraganglioma;
with respect to its modified Shamblin classification, in 1 (14%) resulted in I and in 6
(86%) corresponded to IIIa.
Conclusions: The MDCT angiography has the advantage of convenience in performing, accuracy
and specificity in features, is the method of choice in detecting carotid body tumor. Different kinds
of reconstruction techniques showed the location, size, shape, and extent of the lesions and displayed
the lesion in any directions, clearly displayed the relation between the tumor and carotid artery
and show more reliable diagnostic information.
