Streptococcus agalactiae serotype V, first molecular study in Misiones, Argentina

ABSTRACT
Background. Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) serotype V, is one of the most common serotypes associated with
invasive infection in adults and neonates. Virulence factors and their association with resistance to macrolides, has
already been highlighted.
Material and methods. 14 strains GBS serotype V from a total of 197 were studied. Conventional PCR was used
to search for genes for virulence and resistance to macrolides. The sensitivity to these antimicrobials was determined
by D-test and CIM.
Results.
hylB and
bca genes were detected in 100% of the strains. In 78.6% of them 4 or more genes associated
with virulence were detected. The 21.43% of the strains were resistant to macrolides (a constitutive phenotype
cMLS
B and 2 inducible phenotypes iMLS
B) and in them the
ermB, mefA and
ermTR genes were identified.
Conclusions. The high frequency of genes associated with virulence and resistance to macrolides detected in
this study of GBS serotype V, encourages us to strengthen epidemiological surveillance strategies of these strains,
given the impact they may have in the treatment of infections in patients allergic to penicillin and vaccine design
strategies.
