ABSTRACT
Adequate pain control is one of the cornerstones to get an early postoperative recovery and decreased hospital stay, costs, morbidity and mortality.
Objective: To compare the effectiveness of two analgesic regimens in multifractured patients undergoing surgery by prescribing conventional NSAIDs
versus the combination of morphine plus ketorolac.
Methods: In a clinical, descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective study, clinical records were reviewed of multifractured inpatients of a trauma hospital and records of patients seen by the Interdisciplinary Center for the Study and Treatment of Pain and Palliative Care (CIETD-CP) from January to December 2011; demographics, analgesic requirement, total dosage in 24 hours, intervals of administration, vital signs, visual analog scale and verbal analog scale in the immediate postoperative period, at 24 and 48 hours, adverse reactions and comorbidities were considered.
Results: The average pain according to the visual analog scale at 12, 24 and 48 hours was statistically significant for both groups. The intensity of pain according to the verbal analog scale for group one was predominantly moderate, and mild for group two. The NSAID used were ketorolac 78.7% and 30.3% metamizol.
Conclusions: The opioid-NSAID group achieved better analgesia with statistically significant differences.
