ABSTRACT
Pressure sores are devastating necrotic lesions caused by the pressure that is produced when staying in bed or in a single position for long periods. They can be prevented if programs are appropriately carried out. There are different risk factors, the most important being the patient’s forced immobility. Patients with severe contractures that do not move on their own and do not have their relatives support or people to take care of them are bad candidates to have a reconstructive procedure. In young patients with raquimedular traumatic lesions, it is necessary to wait for the bereavement stage to pass in order for the patient to be in a better emotional state to begin the surgical treatment. The surgery should be carried out in the young patient who has already accepted his/her lesion and is willing to do whatever is necessary for his/her rehabilitation; who can move on his/her own he/she knows how to manage excretions, with nutritional support, whose general conditions are good and has support of relatives who know how to help him/her physically and emotionally. The prevention and treatment of pressure sores involves the nursing personnel, doctors and surgeons, the personnel of Physical Medicine and rehabilitation, as well as his/her family and mainly the patient. A patient who does not want to or cannot cooperate in his/her treatment will be condemned to the formation of a pressure sore that becomes bigger and more complex until it reaches fatal consequences.
