ABSTRACT
Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is one of the most common complaints following surgery, occurring in more than 30% of surgeries, or as high as 70% in high risk patients. The related problem of post discharge and vomiting has received increasing attention especially in the context of ambulatory surgery. There have been great advances in the treatment of this common postoperative complication, however successful patient outcome require a multidisciplinary approach. The 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 receptor antagonists continue to be the mainstay of antiemetic therapy, but newer approaches such as neurokinin-1 antagonist, a longer acting serotonin receptor antagonist and multimodal management are gaining relevance. Effective evaluation, prevention and treatment of PONV improve patient outcome and the quality and safety of anesthesia.
