ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the efficiency of Mannheim Index in the prognosis of generalized peritonitis.
Methods: An observational, analytical cohort study in patients with generalized peritonitis admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes at Teaching Provincial General Hospital from January 1, 1999 to March 31, 2001 was carried out. One hundred fifty eight patients with the previously mentioned diagnosis were included and evaluated. The Mannheim Index (MI) was applied to all patients during the first 24 h after admission. Prognosis index was evaluated based on patient state at discharge from the ICU. We determined sensitivity and specificity and positive and negative predictive values from the Mannheim Index to predict death.
Results: With fewer than 26 points, mortality was 7.0% and same or › 26, 76.6%. Sensitivity was 71.8%, specificity from 94.4%, positive predictive value was 76.6%, and negative predictive value was 92.9%. It was concluded that MI is useful for prognostic evaluation of generalized peritonitis when used at patient admission at the ICU; 26 was established as mean.
