Magnetic resonance in pelvic floor and perineum evaluation

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Clinical evaluation of the pelvic floor and the perineum can be very difficult in the presence of inflammation or neoplasia.
Matherial and methods: Patients who underwent MRI of the pelvic floor and the perineum were studied (n = 40). Demographic data, etiology of patient condition, and correlation between clinical findings and MRI were analyzed.
Results: Between March 1993 and February 2002, 40 patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Twenty eight were males. Their average age was 60.3 years (range 4 months to 75 years). MRI was performed on 14 patients (35%) with complex fistulae-in-ano. Eight patients (20%) complained of acute anal pain, clinical evaluation was not conclusive, and MRI was performed. Six patients (five female) were studied for chronic pelvic pain. In two cases, MRI was performed for coccygodynia. The remaining 10 patients were studied with MRI during preoperative evaluation for pelvic and perineal masses.
Discussion: MRI provides excellent images resolution of the anatomy of the pelvic musculature and surrounding tissues; this, it allows accurate diagnostic evaluation and facilitates surgical planning in selected patients with benign, malignant, and functional disorders of pelvic floor and perineum.
