ABSTRACT

Objective: To identify clinical and laboratories dates that indicate cancer in patients with acute abdomen. Design: This was a clinical, retrospective cases – controls study. Site: General Hospital. Matherial and methods: Files of 270 patients with urgent abdominal surgery from July 1997 to June 2000 were reviewed. Patients were excluded with antecedent of cancer and age under 40 years. In 15 patients, cancer was found as cause of acute abdomen (group A); these was compared with 30 patients with another cause (group B). We observed clinical and laboratory differences between these groups and identified factors that indicate cancer in acute abdomen. Results: Indicative manifestations in acute abdomen and cancer (& = 0.05) were age 60 years, 9 months of chronic manifestations, 48 h of acute abdominal pain, absence of fever, minimum leukocytes and tendency to thrombocytocis. Cancer was found as cause of acute abdomen in 5.55% of patients. Mortality was 5 times more frequent in there patients. Cancer types most frequently detected as cause of acute abdomen were cancers of gall bladder, colon, and ovary. There are factors that indicate cancer in acute abdomen.
