ABSTRACT
Objective. To investigate if a correlation exists between the size of the placenta and the weight of the newborn.
Material and Methods. A traverse, prospective, observational study, in obtained healthy mother placentas, was carried out from January 2006 thru 30 December 2006, we excluded those with the mother’s clinical background of: diabetes mellitus, hypertension, preeclampsia, eclampsia, corioamnionitis, uterine miomatosis and those that did not accept to participate in the study.
Results. 38 placentas were revised, the median value of its weight was of 472.10 grams, with an interval of trust in 94% for the median of 475.74± 468.46 and a variation average of 11.45grams. The weight of those recently born ones presented a median of 3152.89 grams, with an interval of trust in 95% for the median of 3159.21± 3146.57 and variation average¿ pf? 20.38 grams. The coefficient of correlation of the weight of the product, with the weight of the placenta applying the test of Pearson one showed r=0.00048.
Conclusion. To correlation or linear dependency between the increase of weight of the placenta and increase of weight of new born was not documented. The relation weight of the placenta and weight of new born was of 1:7.
