ABSTRACT
Goal: To determine opportunity and continuity of prenatal care in low-risk pregnant women and frequency of cesarean section.
Material and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in 222 woman of low obstetric risk in immediate puerperium stage. They were conventionally selected from a regional general hospital of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS). Information on socio-demographic characteristics of the mother, prenatal care, cesarean section, birth weight, and newborn conditions was collected.
Results: Pregnant women had their initial opportune prenatal visit, 41.9 %; 92.5 % had minimal obstetric intervention, 129 (58.1 %) pregnant woman had subsequent visits; of these, 90.5 % had minimal intervention care, although we studied low-risk pregnant women, 12.6 % (OR = 0.34; IC 95 % = 0.16 to 0.63) who had opportune initial visits, and 19.3 % (OR = 0.23; IC 95 % = 0.07 to .070) continued subsequent visits had cesarean section.
Conclusions: Pregnancies with opportune initial visits and subsequent visits had more cesarean sections. We must have a monitoring program for prenatal care and delivery through a special committee to decrease unnecessary cesarean section.
