ABSTRACT
The number of completely sequenced green algal mitochondrial genomes is expanding rapidly. However, comparative studies have revealed very different mitochondrial genome organizations, structures and gene contents. Gene transfer events from mitochondrial DNA to the nucleus have occurred during the evolutionary history of green algae. This genetic flux has shaped mitochondrial genome content and has increased nuclear genome complexity. This review examines the relationship between mitochondrial and nuclear genome evolution in the chlorophycean lineage of green algae and describes rare genome arrangements that are unlikely to have occurred twice during the evolutionary history of this lineage and therefore can be used in phylogenetic studies.
