Los genomas mitocondriales: ¿Qué nos dicen sobre la evolución de las algas verdes?

RESUMEN
El número de genomas mitocondriales de algas verdes secuenciados va en aumento constante. Sin embargo, estudios comparativos han revelado que los distintos genomas mitocondriales poseen una organización, estructura y contenido de genes muy diferentes. Durante la historia evolutiva de las algas verdes han ocurrido eventos de transferencia de genes del genoma mitocondrial al genoma nuclear. Esta implacable transferencia de genes ha contribuido a definir el contenido de genes del genoma mitocondrial y a la vez ha incrementado la complejidad del genoma nuclear. En esta revisión se analiza la relación que existe entre la evolución de los genomas mitocondriales y nucleares en el linaje de las algas clorofíceas. También se describen rearreglos genómicos poco frecuentes que probablemente hayan ocurrido una sola vez a lo largo de la historia evolutiva de este linaje y por lo tanto pueden ser útiles en estudios filogenéticos.
