ABSTRACT
Eight rnale castrated pigs were used in two digestibility experiments to evaluate the nutritive value of
Leucaena leucocephala and
Brossimum alicastrum in pigs. In one experiment, the apparent digestibility coefficients of Dry Matter, Crude Protein, Hemicellulose, Cellulose and Energy for
Leucaena, and in the other one for the Brossimum, were determined. In the first experiment diets A, B, C and D with four
Leucaena levels (0%, 10%, 20% and 30%, respectively) were evaluated. in the second experiment, diets E, F, G and H, with four
Brossimum levels (0%, 10%, 20% and 30%, respectively), were also evaluated. Dry Matter intake and digestibility declined as forage was increased in the diet. Digestibility coefficients of Dry Matter, Crude Protein, Hemicellulose, Cellulose and Energy of
Leucaena were 39.9%, 34.9%, 59.7%, 43.3% and 33%, respectively. Digestibility coefficients of Dry Matter, Crude Protein, Hemicellulose, Cellulose and Energy of
Brossimum were 43.2%, 33.1%, 65.2%, 57.1% and 41.2%, respectively. Digestible Energy of
Leucaena and
Brossimum were 1475 kcal/kg, and 1578 kcal/kg of Dry Matter, respectively. Results for Dry Matter intake and digestibility suggest that pigs show little ability to use diets rich in fiber, however, the use of alternative diets using forages presents advantages due to both their disponibility and cost.
