ABSTRACT
Objectives: To identify alternatives in cholesterol levels that constitutes risks for cardiovascular diseases, its relation with age and life styles imposed by urbanity, to understand the importance of early primary prevention in some groups of people.
Methods: Transversal descriptive study developed in the North-Center part of Cuba between February 2006 and January 2008 that included 1,297 people at random chosen. To all of them total cholesterol was determined and were stratified according to risk categories. It was also analyzed the correlation between the total of habitants of urban zones, by municipalities, and the percentage of cholesterol of high risk.
Results: From 15 to 35 years there was 8.31 percent of people with high risk cholesterol and from 36 to 60 years, 19.22 percent. The percentage of cholesterol of high risk varied from 2.11 in Quemado de Guines to 4.51 in Sagua la Grande. In the coastal region of Isabela de Sagua the percentage was very low. There was a strong positive relation between the high risk cholesterol levels and the whole number of people from urbanized zones.
Conclusions: Special attention should be taken to the primary prevention of the coronary cardiopathy in people with ages between 36 to 60 years old where high percentages of high risk cholesterol occur. The group of 15 to 35 years old requires changes in their life styles that seem to be associated to the levels of cholesterol of high risk.
