ABSTRACT
Context: The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) defines pain as a sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage. The Taxonomy Committee of the IASP defines acute pain as a pain of recent onset and probable limited duration. It usually has an identifiable temporal and causal relationship to injury or disease.
Objective: The reason to create a task force that will develop a practice guidelines for the management of acute pain is to provide an effective guide for the general practitioner in order to achieve a better outcome.
Settings and results: A questionnaire was conducted in different hospitals in Mexico. The questionnaire was perform by medical staff and applied to 55 patients. It contained 15 main questions. We found that 96.36% of the patients had pain. Most of the patients with pain referred it as moderate to severe. Sixty percent of the patients referred that pain interfered with their daily activities, we found that 54.55% of the patients referred that pain had a diminished mood and 56.56% reported that pain had interfered with their sleep habits.
Conclusions: Acute pain is frequently untreated by medical or paramedical staff, and actually the establish treatment may be expensive and had a poor outcome.
