ABSTRACT
In recent years medical advances have made the transplant of composite tissues, such as the hand transplant or the facial allograft possible, due to a combination of microsurgical techniques and better immunosuppressive drugs, resulting in a longer survival of allografts. One of the main issues that justify the use of facial allograft is that there is virtually an unlimited availability of tissue resembling the one lost by the patient. Another aspect and practically the most important in this kind of reconstruction gives the patient a complete functional reconstruction without the sequel left by skin grafts, flaps or the use of both. This is a review that focuses on the aspects in the evolution of composite tissue transplants and its application to facial allograft.
