ABSTRACT
Introduction: Gall stone disease prevails in older adult, the role of contraction deficiency in its production is not yet clear and its influence upon symptomatology has not been clarified yet.
Objective: To determine by means of ultrasound if there is a difference in the size of the gallbladder in an older adult compared with the young adult and if there is association between deficient emptying of the gallbladder and the gallbladder symptomatology.
Material and methods: 151 patients, forming two groups, from 18 to 40 years old and bigger than 40 years old were studied, including patients without clinical apparent alteration of the gallbladder, without background that could interfere in the gallbladder dynamics.
Patients initially filled a questionnaire that evaluates the gallbladder symptomatology. Patients were measured twice, one with fast and another at the 60 minutes postprandio with volume evaluated.
Results: For the difference of contraction among age groups a momios ratio of 4.3 with an interval of confidence of 95% from 1.002 to 19.220 with a value of χ
2 of p = 0.040 was founded. For the symptomatology and normal contraction ratio against inefficient emptying a momios ratio of 2.6 with an interval of confidence of 95% from 1.22 to 5.78 was found.
Conclusions: Gallbladder emptying deteriorates with aging and the deterioration of the gallbladder emptying with the symptomatology has a relationship.
