ABSTRACT
Objective: to assess the effects of Spring Daylight Saving Time (DST) on subjective perceptions of sleep, mood, interest, concentration, and affectation because of time change.
Method: two days before and five days after the change to spring DST, we assessed the subjective perceptions of insomnia, diurnal sleepiness, mood (anxiety, sadness, and anger), interest, concentration problems, and affectation of 110 High School students. We calculated the differences between assessments and also, we estimated the first evaluation variables that predicted affectation experienced because of time change in the second evaluation.
Results: a significant increase in perceptions of insomnia, sleepiness, concentration problems and affectation was found after change to DST, while sadness showed a marginal decrease. Scores on anger and sleep quality previous to time change predicted affectation because of DST.
Conclusion: DST produces an increase in perceptions of sleep problems, diurnal sleepiness and concentration difficulties during a period of 5 days following time change. This finding suggests that adaptation to DST change is not immediate. Anger and sleep quality previous to time change is related to the affectation experienced because of DST.
