ABSTRACT
There are important anatomical and physiologic differences between the airways of children and adults. Due to this differences, airway procedures in children require particular care. The morphologic and structural changes are continuous since the 4th gestational week until adolescence. Up to the age of 8 years, the changes are in morphology, size and spatial orientation; later, there are only changes in size. This paper describes the main anatomical and functional differences between the airways of children and adults, and their clinical relevance. The comprehension and application of this concepts lead to better management of children’s airways and increase procedural safety.
