Fibrocitos circulantes. Descubrimiento, características y relevancia clínica

RESUMEN
Los fibroblastos de tejido conectivo son considerados parte fundamental del proceso de reparación de heridas; su origen siempre ha sido controversial. Por décadas se ha aceptado que los fibroblastos cercanos a la zona de lesión migran en respuesta a una lesión local, proliferan y sintetizan matriz extracelular. El reciente auge en la investigación de las células troncales o células madre ha proporcionado numerosas evidencias que sugieren que el origen de los fibroblastos puede estar cuando menos, en parte, en la médula ósea.
Los fibrocitos circulantes son células de origen hematopoyético que expresan un inmunofenotipo único caracterizado por la expresión de marcadores de superficie, tales como CD11b+/CD13+/CD34+/CD45+/ MHC II+/ CD86+/ Col I+. Fueron descritos por primera vez en 1994 y se sabe que participan en diversos procesos de tipo inflamatorio, fibrosis y cáncer, entre otros. Esta revisión presenta una visión panorámica de estas células que incluye su descubrimiento, origen y relevancia para la investigación básica y clínica.
