ABSTRACT
Introduction: seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is an inflammatory, erythematous scaly skin disease that occurs in seborrheic areas, predominantly on the face and scalp; of multifactorial etiology, one of the most recognized but controversial theories is the relationship with yeasts of the genus Malassezia.
Objective: the objective of this study is to establish the relationship of yeasts of the genus Malassezia with facial SD and adult SD of the scalp vs healthy skin.
Method: a systematic qualitative review of the literature was carried out in which 270 articles on SD and its relationship with Malassezia were analyzed, of which nine were selected, including 1,099 patients in comparative groups (570 with affected skin and 529 with healthy skin).
Results: a higher density of Malassezia was identified with a predominance of M. restricta and M. globosa in skin with SD compared to healthy skin, this density was directly proportional to the severity of the clinical picture.
Conclusion: there is a clear relationship between Malassezia and facial DS and DS of the scalp with a predominance of M. restricta, M. globosa, M. furfur and M. sympodialis. The colonization of M. restricta is more common in DS of the scalp. This knowledge allows us to optimize therapy by adding antifungals. The direct examination and the physiological and molecular methods are an important tool for the identification of Malassezia species, the diversity of results in several countries allows us to compile and carry out a methodological consensus for future research.
