ABSTRACT
The objective was to know the nutritional status in university students using body mass index and perceived body image. A transversal design was used and a total of 817 university students were included. Body mass index was calculated with the data declared by the students; while perceived body image was obtained asking the students to select a picture, according to their perception which corresponded to their current body image from nine different silhouettes for men and women. To find the correlation between body mass index and perceived body image the Spearman correlation coefficient was applied. Among the results, the prevalence of nutritional status calculated with body mass index was of 21.3% for low weight, 58.9% normal, 17.6% overweight and 2.1% obesity. The prevalence of nutritional status calculated with body image was of 2.6% for low weight, 68.4% normal, 25.5%, overweight and 3.5% obesity. The concordance between body mass index and body image in both sexes was of r = 0.65 with a p ‹ 0.05. It is important to study the frequency of factors such as obesity and low weight that can lead to fatal diseases.
