ABSTRACT
Objective: To compare the prevalence of nasal colonization, antibiotic susceptibility
patterns, and virulence factors of
Staphylococcus aureus isolated from chronic rhinosinusitis
with nasal polyposis patients and healthy subjects.
Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was done from June 2018 to
May 2019 in which
S. aureus strains were isolated from the middle meatus of chronic
rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis patients and healthy subjects to determine antibiotic
susceptibility patterns, Panton-Valentine leukocidin expression (PVL), and biofilm
production in two reference centers.
Results: Nasal colonization prevalence was similar for both groups (12/54 chronic
rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis patients
vs 8/40 healthy subjects, p = 0.52). No
oxacillin resistant strains were isolated. Macrolide resistance was high (one patient
with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasosinusal poliposis
vs 5 healthy subjects, p = 0.2)
as well as induced clindamycin resistance (20, n = 1 chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal
polyposis patients
vs 50%, n = 4 healthy subjects). None of the strains expressed PVL.
Biofilm production was slightly higher in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis
patients, without reaching statistical significance.
Conclusions: S. aureus nasal colonization was similar for both groups. Macrolide
and induced clindamycin resistance were high overall, which could lead to therapeutic
failure if not properly identified.
