ABSTRACT
Background. Kluyvera cryocrescens is a gram negative, oxidase negative, nitrite positive, glucose fermentor. Although
it was previously considered a benign saprophyte, there are reports of infections caused by this microorganism.
The first case in Mexico of bacteremia caused by
K. cryocrescens is reported in a patient with an ileostomy and
history of type 2 diabetes and arterial hypertension, with primary infection in the vascular catheter.
A review of the literature was carried out through an investigation in Pubmed of the cases described to date.
Results. Only 13 cases have been reported, mainly bacteremia, the relationship by sex was similar with the affection
of seven women and six men, with an age range from three weeks of life to 85 years (mean of 36 years). Most
patients presented some comorbidity and the mortality rate calculated in these cases was 23%.
Conclusions. K. cryocrescens is a pathogen that can potentially cause severe infections, with a predilection for
immunosuppressed individuals and with multiple comorbidities.
