Estrés oxidativo como factor de riesgo para el desarrollo de diabetes mellitus, osteoartritis o hipertensión arterial en adultos mayores

RESUMEN
Se ha reportado que el estrés oxidativo (EOx) es un factor
de riesgo para el desarrollo de algunas enfermedades crónico-degenerativas (ECD) durante la vejez; sin embargo, las evidencias científicas no son del todo concluyentes. Por tal motivo, el objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar la influencia del EOx como factor de riesgo de diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM), osteoartritis (OA) o hipertensión arterial (HTA) en una población de adultos mayores (AM). Para tal efecto, se realizó un estudio transversal y comparativo en una muestra de 162 AM: 33 con DM, 40 con HTA, 26 con OA y 63 clínicamente sanos. Se determinaron los lipoperóxidos plasmáticos, el daño oxidativo al ADN, la actividad eritrocitaria de las enzimas antioxidantes SOD y GPx, la capacidad sérica antioxidante total, la razón SOD/GPx y la brecha de antioxidantes (GAP), como marcadores biológicos de EOx. Los datos fueron analizados a través de análisis de varianza, y el cálculo de razón de momios (RM). Los resultados mostraron que los AM con HTA o DM presentan
mayor EOx, caracterizado por mayor daño oxidativo al
ADN aunado a una menor actividad de la GPx, que los sujetos
sanos o con OA, y que el EOx es un factor de riesgo
para la presencia de enfermedad con una RM de 2.45 (IC
95% 1.11-5.40,
p = 0.025). Nuestros hallazgos sugieren que el EOx constituye un factor de riesgo para enfermedades crónico-degenerativas, especialmente para DM e HTA.
