Insuficiencia hepática aguda. Conceptos actuales

RESUMEN

La insuficiencia hepática aguda (IHA) es un síndrome catastrófico multiorgánico presente en individuos previamente sanos, caracterizado por disfunción hepatocelular severa. La etiología varía geográfica y socioeconómicamente. Los virus de hepatitis son la causa más común en el mundo en vías de desarrollo, en tanto que la IHA asociada a fármacos es la presentación predominante en Estados Unidos y Europa. El síndrome clínico es el mismo, independiente de su causa. Es una combinación única de falla multiorgánica severa que progresa rápido y con frecuencia asociada a complicaciones severas. El manejo médico y el trasplante hepático ortotópico de urgencias han mejorado la supervivencia general de los pacientes.
