RESUMEN

El trasplante de hígado es una opción terapéutica pocas veces contemplada en pacientes que padecen cirrosis hepática alcohólica. Un motivo importante de rechazo de los cirujanos es que los consideran como poco probables para su rehabilitación posterior, por lo que tienen baja prioridad a pesar de que la cirrosis hepática alcohólica ocupa uno de los primeros lugares dentro de las enfermedades del hígado. Los resultados obtenidos por varios grupos de investigadores en el mundo han demostrado que el trasplante hepático en quienes padecen cirrosis hepática alcohólica tiene mejores posibilidades de sobrevivencia que en los que padecen otro tipo de enfermedad hepática y reciben trasplante de hígado. Buena parte del éxito del trasplante depende del soporte psicológico y familiar que reciba el paciente para evitar en lo posible la ingestión de etanol. De esta forma, un paciente con cirrosis hepática alcohólica puede solicitar el trasplante, siempre y cuando reciba atención integral que contemple la esfera médica, psicológica y social.
