Función de los complementos antioxidantes durante el ejercicio

RESUMEN
Se sabe que quien realiza ejercicio de forma rutinaria incrementa la producción de radicales libres derivados del oxígeno en sus tejidos, principalmente por el mecanismo de oxidación del oxígeno molecular en las mitocondrias. Estos radicales producen daño importante a los tejidos y a la célula en general, y se sugiere que la ingestión de complementos antioxidantes (principalmente vitaminas A, C y E) puede disminuirlo. También se sostiene que dicha ingestión puede mejorar el rendimiento físico de un atleta, pero no se ha comprobado. En este artículo se revisa brevemente el posible efecto protector de los complementos antioxidantes contra los radicales libres derivados del oxígeno en personas que practican ejercicio.
