ABSTRACT
Objectives: This study evaluated the changes in
the milk feeding pattern as well as the introducing
of sugar in the diet of children aged 0 to 36
months through two different studies with an
interval of 13 years in the city of Curitiba, Paraná,
Brazil.
Material and methods: Similar populations
from the same geographic región were
evaluated using a questionnaire in the years of
1993 and 2006, involving respectively, mothers
of 180 and 94 children. The sugar introduction in
the diet was considered early when it occurred
before the complete 6th month of life. Data were
statistically analyzed using the chi-square test
and Fisher’s exact test (α=0.05).
Results: There
were differences in the frequency of first contact
with sugar (p‹0.001). and which occurred in the
first month complete of life in 61.7% of children
in the first study and only in 3.2% of children
in second study. There were also differences in
breastfeeding pattern (p=0.02) between the two
evaluated periods as the prevalence of children
who were breastfed was higher in the second
study. It was found no statistically significant
differences in the prevalence of bottle-feeding
and bottle-feeding at night and breast-feeding at
night as well as the use of bottle-feeding containing
sugar.
Conclusions: These findings indicate
that breast-feeding may, beyond its various advantages,
also promote the postponement of the
sugar introduction in the infant diet. New researches
are necessary to confirm this hypothesis.
