ABSTRACT
Objective: to compare the prevalence
of cognitive impairment in elderly
with and without type 2 diabetes
mellitus in a Primary Care level unit.
Methods: cross-sectional study carried
out in Ciudad Mante, Tamaulipas,
Mexico. Simple randomized sampling
was used; the sample calculation was
performed for finite populations with
a 95% confidence level, 153 patients
were evaluated. Older adults with and
without DM2, without a diagnosis of
cognitive impairment, dementia or
depression were taken as inclusion
criteria. It was applied the modified
version of the Mini-Mental State Examination
(MMSE) validated in Mexican
population, descriptive and inferential
statistics analysis were made through
χ
2Results: 153
patients were evaluated, the average age
was 69.76 years (±6.82), and women
predominated with 91 participants
(60%). All patients were divided in two
groups, the first one was based on the
diagnosis of DM
2 with 80 participants
(52.3%) and the second one, without
this disease with 73 (47.7%); globally,
48 patients were at risk of cognitive
impairment, patients with DM2, it was
13.72% (n=21), while patients without
DM2, it was 17.64% (n=27). There
were no statistically significant differences
in any of the groups (p›0.05).
Conclusion: no statistically significant
differences were found to support a predominance
of cognitive impairment in
patients with DM2, an aspect considered
in other studies; other clinical characteristics
and the life course of each patient
should be studied in depth in order to
establish possible associations among
the study variables.
