ABSTRACT
Introduction: In the practical work of health workers, occupational risks are mainly developed in the hospital setting. Such professionals are usually exposed to multiple risks. Objective: To reflect on the occupational risks involving health workers during the new coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).
Methods: It is a theoretical-reflective qualitative essay, based on national and international literature. The search for studies was possible due to the choice of controlled descriptors: riegos laborales [occupational risks], personal de salud [health personnel], infecciones por coronavirus [coronavirus infections], coronavirus [coronavirus], and extensive Latin American and international databases. We have included materials published in the last five years.
Results: The setting of the COVID-19 pandemic causes uncertainties to healthcare workers in the front line for dealing with the virus. The epidemiological characteristics of the new coronavirus and how it works in the long term are not fully understood. Therefore, the occupational risks involving the workers have sometimes been exacerbated, regarding the level of infectivity of the virus, in addition to its consequences for the physical and mental health of the entire society.
Conclusions: It is essential to know and control the risks to which health workers are exposed and, therefore, to establish strategies for the prevention and minimization of diseases.
