ABSTRACT
Introduction: Research in health policies and systems is one of the least addressed by nursing professionals. This includes studies about service quality, as well as healthcare provider and patient satisfaction. The development of such capacities in nursing students for this type of research contributes to their professional fulfillment. Objective: To describe the outcomes of the actions carried out in the period from September 2017 to May 2018 for the development of nursing students’ individual capacities for carrying out research in health policies and systems.
Methods: We carried out an intervention study with 42 undergraduate Nursing students. We applied a methodology validated by a previous project, which included initial characterization, diagnosis, workshops for familiarization, design and follow-up, as well as evaluation, based on the expected outcomes.
Results: We identified dominance of clinical research in training completion papers. Capacities were developed that allowed the design and the implementation of ten student projects, related with the topics of nursing quality of care and satisfaction, and the evaluation of programs such as those for diabetic care and cervical cancer.
Conclusions: The development of Nursing students’ capacities for carrying out research in health policies and services requires the integration of teaching activities together with actions that take into account the particularities of this type of study.
